How to Start a Car Detailing Business: Steps, Water Rules and First Prices

Published October 3, 2026 · By the LaunchKit team · How these guides are written

TL;DR: Choose mobile or a fixed location, register your business and get a free EIN from the IRS. Check state, county and city licenses, and plan your wash water so it stays out of storm drains. Buy insurance, then set prices. TopDetailers' 2026 study of 2,156 US detailers' advertised prices puts the median full detail at $259.

Should you start a mobile or fixed-location detailing business?

  • Mobile: you go to the customer's home or workplace. Lower rent, more driving, and you need a plan for water and power.
  • Fixed location: a garage or shop. Customers come to you. Higher fixed costs, but easier water handling and you can work in any weather.

Many detailers start mobile and add a shop later. Pick one to start, because it changes your permits, insurance and prices.

How do you start a car detailing business? Step by step

1. Pick your services

Start with three or four: exterior wash and wax, interior detail, full detail, and one add-on such as headlight restoration. Add ceramic coatings or paint correction after training.

2. Choose a business structure

Many detailers start as sole proprietors. An LLC adds some separation between business and personal assets. Our small business start-up checklist covers the choice.

3. Register your business name

Trading under a name that isn't your own? Ask your state, county or city whether you need to register a DBA ("doing business as") name. The SBA's register your business page explains the options.

4. Get an EIN

You can apply for an EIN on the IRS website for free. Never pay a third party for one. Read our EIN guide.

5. Check licenses and permits

Ask your city and county whether you need a general business license, and whether mobile work needs a permit. Our guide to US business licenses and permits shows where to look.

6. Plan your wash water

This one catches mobile detailers out. More below.

7. Get insurance

You'll be working on other people's cars, often on their property. Ask a licensed agent about general liability and coverage for customers' vehicles in your care.

8. Set your prices

Use real market prices as a check, then price from your own time and costs.

9. Set up your paperwork

Have a client registration form, a vehicle condition note with photos, and an invoice routine before your first paid job.

Where can you dump car wash water?

Not into the street. The EPA's citizen guide to stormwater says anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into local waters.

The EPA's stormwater fact sheet on vehicle washing (December 2021) is written for city fleets, but the practice carries over. Its practical steps:

  • avoid discharging wash water to storm drains
  • for a small job, use a bermed wash area and capture the water with a wet/dry vacuum
  • send it to the sanitary sewer only with the sewer authority's permission

Your city or county may have its own rules for mobile washing. Ask the local stormwater or public works office before your first job. Waterless and rinseless products cut down on runoff.

How much does it cost to start a car detailing business?

There's no reliable national start-up figure, so we haven't made one up. Price these locally:

  • registration and license fees
  • insurance
  • pressure washer, vacuum, extractor, polisher
  • chemicals, towels and pads
  • a water tank, mat and generator if you're mobile
  • a vehicle, or rent for a shop

How much should a new detailer charge?

These are market figures to check your prices against:

ServiceMedianMiddle rangePublished by
Full detail$259$175–$350900 detailers
Interior detail$199$150–$250912 detailers
Exterior detail$189$125–$265655 detailers

Thumbtack puts mobile car detailing at $144 to $254 on average (updated April 15, 2026).

Check what detailers near you advertise for each package before you set yours.

What taxes does a detailer pay?

Read the IRS pages on self-employment tax and estimated taxes, or ask an accountant what applies to you. Then set aside part of every payment from day one.

Keep every receipt for chemicals, equipment and mileage. Our recordkeeping checklist shows what to keep.

How do you get your first detailing customers?

  • Detail a friend's car and take before-and-after photos (with their permission).
  • Set up a Google Business Profile with your service area and prices.
  • Leave a simple price card with local offices or apartment managers.
  • Ask every customer for a review, and offer a rebooking date.

Paperwork for your first jobs

The Car Detailer Startup Guide ($7.99) is a 20-page US Letter PDF with a setup roadmap covering priorities, pricing and first-customer planning, plus local readiness checks for the rules to verify.

Car Detailer Business Documents Premium ($19.99) has six core forms, including Client Registration, a Service Log and an Invoice Checklist, as fillable PDFs and Word files.

FAQ

Do I need a license to start a car detailing business?

Check with your state, county and city. Ask each whether you need a general business license, and whether mobile work needs a permit.

Can I start a car detailing business from home?

Many detailers run the office from home and work at customers' locations. If you want to wash cars at home for pay, check zoning and water rules with your city first.

Can I start a detailing business with no money?

Not with zero. The EIN is free, but you'll pay for supplies, any license fees and insurance. Start with a small kit and a short service list.

How much does a full detail cost?

TopDetailers' study of advertised prices puts the median full detail at $259, with the middle half at $175 to $350 (September 2026).
